8th April, 2003. 1:58 pm. All kinds of crazy stuff

Fannish Stuff

I started out small. X-Files was my first internet love affair and I fell hard. I found Gossamer and spent an entire summer going thorough the archives. My love flickered around Season 6 of the t.v series and now it's just a fond memory. But I still look at my saved stories.

Then came Stargate SG-1. Ah, Jack and Daniel. Not a huge amount of good fiction, but the good stuff that is out there is very good.

I started following Smallville from the moment the fandom started. I'm a huge comic book geek, especially DC, so a fresh perspective on Superman? I was glued to the t.v. Clex 4 eva! The amount of great fiction out there is astounding. And, seeing authors that I know from other fandoms is such a kick.

Finally, even though I tried so damn hard to resist it, Harry Potter sucked me in. It's wrong, it's wrong, I'm too old to be in love with these characters, even when they are of legal age (which is the only fic I'm comfortable reading), but damn it! The talent in the fandom sucks me in.

So, I've decided to start reccomending at least one fic a day. Who the hell am I to rec a story? Well, I'm doing this for a couple of reasons:

1. I love to read. I mean love it. I've been reading books since I was a wee little thing and I believe I have an eye for a good story.

2. It will prod my sorry ass to actually feed back the authors who have given me so much pleasure over the years. If I schedule to do these rec's once a day (disclaimer: unless there is an emergency in r/l that prevents me from posting) I will also make it part of that schedule to post feedback to the author. Of course, if the author doesn't want feedback, I will respect their wishes.

3. All the cool kids do it.

So there it is. I'm doing this more for motivation for myself, but if I can point someone to a gem of a story that was missed that's just icing on the cake.

**clears throat**

Rec o' the day - A Sort of Walking Miracle by the marvelous [info]rivkat. I fell in love with RivkaT while reading her amazing Iolokus, co-authored by the equally talented [info]mustangsally78. Rivka's ability to pack a hell of a punch has carried over to Smallville fan fiction. Amazing story of a future that is scary, seductive and not so far-fetched. Great characterization, which is impressive because of the universe the story is set in. Go read it!

**wipes off the sweat from all of the linking and taging**

Rec o' the day 2 - Something I Don't Already Know by [info]liviapenn. Lois Lane! Nerd Clark! Season One Chloe! More than one dimension Superman! Seriously though, I love this story. Smart dialogue, Superman the Movie and Superman II references, a good plot and just all around yayness.

Now I'm going to write two (two!) feed back emails, and send them off! Go team me!

1st April, 2003. 4:26 pm. I weep for America

So, I had jury duty yesterday. Lots of waiting, lots of coffee being inhaled but overall the building was very nice. Clean, plenty of vending machines and the personnel were pleasant. Everything is groovy.

Then I was assigned to Auxiliary Court 1. A drug court. 56 fellow citizens were brought in to be questioned by the Prosecution and Defense over the course of the day. 12 of the 56 were chosen. I was not one of them, I think because I raised my hand when the ADA asked if anyone thought drugs should be legalized.

I want to state for the record the following:

1. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty

2. The 5th amendment of the Constitution grants citizens the right to not incriminate themselves. Also, by state law, a juror cannot hold that against the accused.

I was stunned and dismayed by how many of those 56 people (I'd say about 30) did not understand or flat out refused to believe the above two points. It was disturbing to say the least.

Current mood: annoyed.
Current music: Stevie Wonder - Isn't She Lovely.

la la la...

Just another Sunday in my life. Taught Sunday School this morning. My church is very cool, and my kids are just as cute as can be. I am very glad, however, that I learned to say no a couple of years back. Let me explain.

When I was a wee lass I learned the lesson that you worked and sacrificed until your fingers were bleeding and you dropped from exhaustion. I volunteered for everything. I said yes to everybody. And it nearly killed me. I had a little mini rebellion in my mid twenties, quit my corporate job and moved back to the city I actually wanted to live in. And I learned how to say no.

Whenever you join a group, whether it's a volunteer organization or a church or whatever, they are always looking for people who can commit time and resources. And there is always more to be done than people to do it. I am so glad I've learned how to say no, but not happy it took me so long to do it.

On the sinus front, still trying to self medicate with green tea and steam. Chinese food was added to the mix, and it was quite good. I am stuffed.

I will have to take actual pills tomorrow though to make it through JURY DUTY!! Blah and pooey! I moved from one county to another 2 years ago and this is the first time I've been summoned for jury duty in my present location. It's the yucky urban courthouse where all the really attractive people are sent. And it's going to be a Monday when all the really big nasty cases are assigned. Must choose book to bring with me.

And finally, Viva La Bexistance! [info]bexless

Current mood: okay.
Current music: Live in Mono - Great Expectations soundtrack.

29th March, 2003. 10:22 am.

I skipped a day of posting because apparently my sinuses have decided to come out of my head through my nose. I fell asleep on my boss's couch around 3:30pm after taking 2 OTC sinus pills. He woke me up when he started yelling at his laptop.

My boss is very strange. He crashed his desktop two days ago and is well on his way to trashing his laptop, as well. He's one of those people who sends machines into fits by just sitting or standing by them. I refuse to touch his computer when he's in the office because it always shuts down or sparks or something.

Anyway, after I rolled off the couch, Captain Obvious asks me if I'm feeling all right. I went to the bathroom to splash water on my face, then drank some coffee to wake me up. BIG mistake. Caffeine and sinus medicine cause a chemical reaction in my body that is a terrible thing to behold. I don't even remember driving home.

I went to bed at 6:00 pm and woke up at 8:30 am. And my sinuses still hurt.

On the bright side, my roommate's dog now drops my underwear when I scream at him rather than hiding it in the apartment. He's just had his first birthday and is beginning to understand there are consequences for his actions. He's cute as hell though, so he gets away with a lot.

I am now going to drink lots of hot green tea and surf the internet. I may be taking a hot shower at some point to try and force steam up my nose. Yay!

Current mood: awake.
Current music: Jim Brickman - Valentine.

And now I'm zooming along! Thank you [info]mos_self for the code to create this journal. I'm sure I will accidently step on some toes, as I am a complete newbie at posting on one of these things.

I've been lurking for a long time though, so I will be friending like crazy.

Yay me! Post number 3

Current mood: accomplished.

Wow. I did it right the first time. Unusual occurence. I feel...naked.

No, really. It's sort of odd to be out here. I guess I'll just have to get used to it.

This is really exciting so far, huh? Well, I'm going to count tonights entry as practice.

Current mood: anxious.
